Seminar: Get Set For School™ (GSS) Literacy & Math Workshop

Speakers: Dr Peter Giroux
Dr Peter Giroux is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University, a Master’s of Health Science from Mississippi College and a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). He has twenty-four years of experience as an OT and fourteen years of experience using the Handwriting Without Tears® program. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains active in clinical practice by providing occupational therapy services in a school based private practice serving children with special and exceptional needs. He has used the HWT program with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for HWT since March of 2000.

  • Pre-K Discovery: The importance of self-directed discovery and explicit instruction and how they apply to playful learning
  • Developmental Scope and Sequence of Pre-K Math and Literacy: Developmental way of teaching to address different learning styles
  • Pre-K Number and Math Skills: Multisensory activities and materials to teach children number concepts, geometry, patterns/algebra, numbers and operations, data representation, problem solving, and measurement

  • Pre-K Language and Literacy Skills: Multisensory activities and materials that teach children alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, comprehension, writing, and concepts about print
