Seminar: Introduction to Therapeutic Uses of Puppets

Meet Polly the Puppet! Creating a Co-Therapist Character and Exploring Directive/Non-Directive Puppet Play Therapy

Participants will be introduced to the principles, theory, and practice of using puppets with clients. Both Directive and Non-directive activities will be discussed and exemplified. Participants will have an opportunity to try a variety of approaches to the use of puppets as well as the creation of a “Co-Therapist” character to use when working with children and explore the metaphors behind puppet play.

Speaker: Lorri Yasenik PhD, RPT-S, CPT-S

Lorri Yasenik PhD, RPT-S, CPT-S is the co-founder and Director of Rocky Mountain Play Therapy Institute in Calgary Alberta Canada and the founder and co-director of the International Centre for Children and Family Law in Sydney Australia. Lorri is a registered Play Therapist- Supervisor with Association for Play Therapy (APT) and a Certified Play Therapist-Supervisor with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT).

Lorri provides child psychotherapy and play therapy and delivers national and international training related to children’s issues and specialized child and play therapies including treatment of trauma, developmental issues, children of high conflict separation and divorce, attachment, domestic violence and adjustment issues. Lorri has co-authored three books, multiple chapters and articles related to specialized child therapy and child related practice.

Goals of Introduction to Sandplay will Include:
  1. Introduction to puppets, history and theory
  2. Debrief puppet play scenes with a partner
  3. Document the session using recording forms
  4. “Invite” clients to join a story and contribute to the narrative
Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the process of creating a puppet voice and character
  2. Use a puppet to invite a child into the therapeutic process
  3. Explain the therapeutic use of puppets to caregivers
  4. Use puppets to create a therapeutic story

Materials needed by participants: 2-3 Puppets and a journaling notebook

This training cannot be used towards Certified Play Therapist or Registered Play Therapist credentials or for CE’s for CPTs or RPTs with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT) or the Association for Play Therapy (APT). Exception: Those with a Master’s Degree in Mental Health may use the course towards Continuing Education upon the approval of APT or CAPT.
