Seminar: Strategies for children with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)

In this 3.5-hour seminar/workshop you will gain a general understanding of CAPD and the type of difficulties these children may experience (particularly in the classroom). You will learn strategies and modifications to apply in the classroom/working environment. This will include two group “breakout sessions” to discuss a case study and your own circumstances/challenges in dealing with these children.

Speaker: Auriel Sher, BSc (Logopaedics) UCT, MAud SA CCP

Auriel Sher works part-time as a senior clinical educator for The University of Queensland Audiology Clinic in Brisbane, Australia. She qualified as an Audiologist and Speech Pathologist in South Africa in 1986 and moved to Australia in 1996. Auriel has worked in school, hospital, private practice and university environments. Her 35 years of experience in adult and paediatric complex diagnostic assessment facilitates student clinical education and she specialises in Central Auditory Processing assessment and management. Auriel has three adult children and is passionate about travelling the world.

Course Outline

The following topics will be covered:

  1. What is CAPD?
  2. Prevalence and cause of CAPD
  3. How do children with CAPD present behaviourally?
  4. CAPD intervention and strategies to implement in the classroom/ working environment
  5. Group session one: Case study to discuss possible strategies for that child
  6. Group session two: Group discussion about your personal experiences with CAPD children and how you can implement strategies in your classroom/working environment.
Course Objectives
  • To update knowledge and understanding of how children with CAPD may present in the classroom/working environment
  • To develop strategies to handle and assist children with CAPD
  • To extend what has been learnt by discussing a case study and reflect on your own working environment and what changes can be made to assist these children
Disclaimer

This training session will focus on practical strategies for managing CAPD in children. Other aspects of CAPD such as its validity as a construct and its assessment and management as a clinical entity, whilst fascinating, will not be considered in this session.
