Seminar: How a Developing Brain Can Impact Learning of Preschoolers

Participants will learn about early childhood development, specifically from a neurobiology perspective.

Special attention will be on teaching parents/caregivers how to assess whether an overwhelming or traumatic experiences can affect the child's development in four connected areas: Physical, Cognitive, Emotional and Social.

Speaker: Dr. Alicia Pon Ph.D. RPTS, SEP®
Dr. Alicia has worked for over 24 years in social services and private practice in Hong Kong and Singapore. At present, she is a Faculty member with the National University of Singapore. Dr. Alicia also continues to provide clinical consultation through her private practice group. Dr. Alicia’s training is in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Analytical Psychology, Play Therapy, Sandplay Therapy, Sensorimotor Art Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Touch Skills, Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy, Brainspotting, and Social Work. Her clinical experiences and specializations include complex trauma, divorce & separation, grief & loss, adoption & attachment, developmental stresses, and parent child relationship.
Course Outline
  1. The brain development: from conception to early school age period.
  2. Serve and return interactions between the child and his/her caregivers.
  3. The development of executive functions and its impact on learning.
  4. Stress and its impact on the brain development.
Course Objectives

Learner will be able to :

  1. Understand how children develop and grow from a neurobiology perspective.
  2. Understand how early childhood experiences can affect children's development.
  3. Learn playful engagement to connect and regulate a child.
