2 Full-Day Workshop

Seminar: Trauma Informed Care for Children

In this contemporary society, many children have experienced some form of trauma either directly or vicariously. Because children's reactions may be different from adults, and because they may not be able to verbalize their reactions to threatening or dangerous events, many people assume that young age protects children from the impact of traumatic experiences. However, many research have shown that nearly all children and adolescents express some kind of distress or behavioral change in the acute phase of recovery from a traumatic event. Though they are removed from the stressful environment, their traumatic experiences may not have been successfully renegotiated. Hence it is important for professionals to have some understanding and appreciation on how best to help these children who exhibit symptoms or behaviors associated to trauma.

In this 2-day workshop, the participants will learn about the theoretical and practice frameworks of trauma and how trauma reactions look like with children. Through case discussions and experiential activities, participants will learn to use therapeutic play and somatic approaches to intervene with children’s behavioral and emotional dysregulations. In addition, participants will learn tips and strategies for talking to and working with caregivers.
