3 Full-Day Workshop
Seminar: Introduction to PROMPT
This 3 day intensive workshop focuses on teaching the technique of PROMPT. The training is hands-on tactile-kinesethic input and emphasizes the need to integrate this into holistic therapy approach.

Speaker: Karin Brinkmann,
Karin Brinkmann has worked in her own private practice since 1991, where she sees a broad variety of children with speech, language and/or feeding problems. Besides working with these children, she also lectures on sensory processing disorders, specifically for speech- and language therapists, and on PROMPT.She has been involved with Prompt Institute with the translation of PROMPT teaching manual into Dutch.
Course Outline
This workshop focuses on technique and learning the four levels (Parameter, Syllable, Complex and Surface) of prompting that support the broader, holistic philosophy and approach of PROMPT.
Day One
- Video exemplar of PROMPT Overview of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of PROMPT Introduction of Motor Speech Hierarchy and Parameters Video review of breakdowns at each stage
- Continue observation of client tapes/functional speech system analysis
- Principles of physiological support, air-stream management, mandibular, labial-facial and lingual control
- Introduction of voiced/voiceless and nasal contrasts; vowels; and bilabials
- PROMPT practice, CV and CVC combinations
- Introduction of lingua-alveolars, labial dental and rounded vowels. Practice combinations
Day Two
- Worksheet #1 Surface PROMPTs
- Video review of Motor-Speech Hierarchy
- Introduction of short vowels and diphthongs. Sibilants and liquid. Contrast short phrases - with vowel height differences
- Finish all consonants, affricatives, and semi-vowels
- Worksheet #2: Complex PROMPTs
- View video of two clients developing functional units. Practice combinations of motor-phoneme units
- Practice all above motor-phonemes in CV's, VC's and words
Day Three
- (Syllable prompts) Review of PROMPTs and practice time
- Complete Worksheet #3: Identification of Planes of Movement
- Pair practice and prompting phrases (Surface PROMPTs)
- Video- taping of partner practice with short phrases
- Treatment Planning
- Continue treatment planning with group activity
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to :
- Describe the PROMPT Application Principles
- Apply different levels of PROMPTing (Parameter, Syllable Complex, Surface), as appropriate to the selected case at a BASIC (phoneme, CVC, or phrase) level.
- Demonstrate a working familiarity with the Motor-Speech Hierarchy.
- Analyse, using the Systems Analysis Check list, the strengths and weaknesses of a client's motor- speech system.
- Design one therapy activity that utilizes all of the above.
