2 Half-Day Workshop
Seminar: After the Meltdown
When working or living with a child/adolescent with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, or another developmental/behavioral disorder, meltdowns may occur that may be a result of sensory overload, cognitive overload or due to inability to self-regulate emotions. This full day seminar will provide many practical hands-on strategies. This information and fun-packed seminar is designed for parents, educators, therapists, counsellors, psychologists and all those who are interested in providing supports to children/adolescents with an ASD, ADHD, behaviour disorders or other disabilities.

Speaker: Kathy Kaluza Morris
Kathy Kaluza Morris is a national/international speaker and consultant who has supported teachers, parents, and districts in all 50 U. S. states, Canada, Mexico, and Singapore. An experienced educator for 43 years as a speech therapist, teacher of students with emotional/behaviour disorders, teacher of students with an autism spectrum disorders, as well as cerebral palsy and other developmental disorders.
Kathy was honoured as Outstanding Educator for Children with Disabilities for the President’s Commission on Special Education (2002).Recently, she and he husband, Guy, were honoured by the ARC of Texas with the Lifetime Achievement Award for supporting persons with disabilities. Kathy has her Advanced Autism Certification, Level 2, from IBCCES (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards).

Course Objectives
On completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- To recognize the warning signs of a meltdown
- Respond appropriately to each stage:
- Rumbling
- Meltdown
- Recovery
- Determine if behaviour is a result of a tantrum or meltdown
- Explain which behaviours are as a result of the neuroanatomy of the brain
- Describe mirror neurons and what occurs if these are “broken”
- View how a meltdown affects a person with ASD
- Discuss visual strategies for prevention, intervention and post-vention strategies
- Differentiate between instructional consequences and punitive consequences
- Identify at least 10 visual strategies that can be implemented as a post-vention strategies that then become intervention strategies
- Reference one instructional strategy he would use to address Eloise’s behaviour

This workshop is appropriate for all grade levels (pre-k to secondary) special education and general education teachers, social workers, counsellors, psychologists, administrators and mental health professionals.
