Seminar: A Spectrum of Strategies for the Spectrum of Autism - Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Autism Specific Behavior Therapy (ABT)

The workshop will provide an overview of a so-called "toolbox" of ABT (Autism-specific Behavior Therapy). Using videos and role-play participants will be introduced to the Discrete Trial Format, Pivotal Response Training, Visual Supports, Precision Teaching, Verbal Behavior and Cognitive Behavior Modification. Long and short-term goals of therapy and support will be presented, tailored to the individual's abilities, interests and his environment.

Speaker: Dr. Vera Bernard-Opitz

Dr. Vera Bernard-Opitz is a German American psychotherapist and BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate), who has worked with more than 1000 children, adolescents and adults in Germany, the United States and Singapore.

Vera is an internationally recognized autism specialist, psychotherapist, parent trainer, book author and speaker. She has published research papers as well as books on ABA/ABT, Behavior Problems, Visual Support and Cartoons for Social Skills and Communication. In her practice series "AutismConrete“ eight international authors introduce strategies, such as Precision Teaching, Integrated Playgroups, Video modeling or Inclusion.

Vera works as BCBA-D (Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate) and IBA (International Behavior Analyst), supporting parents, supervising home teams and consulting individuals with ASD from her "hometowns" in Irvine (CA) and Hildesheim. She loves to help through online consultation as well as in online talks and workshops.

  • Role-play of ABT-strategies in small groups

Course Objectives

Participants will learn to …

  1. Describe the relation of ABA and ABT.
  2. Characterize at least two ABT-strategies for individuals on each end of the Autism Spectrum.
  3. Compare the Discrete Trial Format to Pivotal Response Training.
  4. Outline the role Precision Teaching plays in working with students with AS.
  5. Discuss how Visual Support can facilitate complex conversations.
  6. Describe a long-term goal and a sequence of short-term goals for social behavior with one of your students in mind.
  7. Outline a specific teaching goal for your student, which can be taught through cartoons or video modeling.
  8. Comment on the role of humility in ABA/ABT.
