Seminar: Therapeutic Play for Helping Children with Mental Health Challenges at home, in school and community

Play is a child's natural way to learn and communicate. Therapeutic Play helps children express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences, enhancing their understanding and coping skills to prevent or overcome psychosocial problems.

Speaker: Hannah Sun-Reid, MA, MDE, RP

Hannah Sun-Reid lives and works in Ontario Canada and has more than 35 years’ experience working therapeutically with children and families. She is a Certified Play Therapist, Supervisor and Approved training provider with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT). She has been teaching play therapy and mentoring play therapists in Canada and internationally for the past 20 years. Hannah is a board member and the Certification committee chair with CAPT. She is also a certified therapist, supervisor, and trainer in Theraplay and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy. Hannah is an author of therapeutic children’s books and games.

Course Outline

Participants will learn to use Play Therapy approaches for conducting initial evaluations to identify strengths and challenges, as well as implementing Therapeutic Play interventions in school and community settings. The workshop incorporates visual representations, hands-on activities, and video clips to bridge theory and practice. Participants will be introduced to simple, practical activities they can take home and use immediately with the children and families they serve.

Course Objectives
  1. Understand the power and value of play, and therapeutic power of Play Therapy.
  2. Learn to conduct initial evaluations that identify strengths and challenges using Play Therapy approaches.
  3. Learn to develop Play Therapy intervention plans for common mental health challenges in children.
  4. Learn to implement Therapeutic Play interventions and activities to support children and families.
  5. Learn to apply a Therapeutic Play approach to assist a group of children experiencing a crisis event in a school or community setting.
